Scientists have discovered what may be the oldest bird fossil ever found in a late Mesozoic stratum in Fengning, north China's Hebei province.
The fossil, about 55 centimeters in length, is intact with clear traces of feathers.
Eighteen teeth and a cervical and coccygeal vertebra were found with the prehistoric bird.
A researcher from the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences says the fossil may be older than the oldest known bird, Archaeopteryx, which was discovered in Germany in the 19th Century.
