Full Text :
The AusIMM / AIG International Mining Geology Conference series is the premium global forum for mining geologists. It has a strong reputation for providing a stimulating environment in which geologists can exchange ideas and discuss the latest developments that impact on their work. Commencing in 1990, this Seventh Conference in the series, follows on from successful meetings held in 2003 (Bendigo) and 2006 (Darwin). This is the first in the series to be held outside of Australia; in Queenstown, New Zealand.Mining geology is a multi-faceted discipline involving operational mine geologists and consultants, supported by software providers, academics and government-based researchers. It draws on numerous skills ranging from geology, numeracy and information technologies, through to other disciplines such as mining and geotechnical engineering, metallurgy, and the management and corporate fields. The mining industry is experiencing an unprecedented boom at present, with the effect of increasing the pressure and technical challenges faced by the mining geologist. Despite the boom, there is continued corporate pressure to reduce costs, increase efficiencies and production, and all within a framework of safe operations, environmental legislation and economic sustainability in an uncertain world.
