Today, remote sensing images have become a valuable tool for exploration of different mineral deposits. It is often observed that in the areas with Cu mineralization, associated extensive hydrothermal alteration and structural phenomena can be easily recognized by remote sensing data. Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus sensor (ETM+) on board Landsat 7 is capable of mapping alteration zones with the help of the sensors that detect the spectral response of hydrothermal minerals in the NIR and SWIR regions of the EM spectrum. Due to the presence of a panchromatic band with spatial resolution of 15 meters, structural elements associated with Cu mineralization can be well studied. The study area is located in the southeast part of the Iranian volcanic-sedimentary belt and covers an approximate area of 2039 sq. km. In this study, various image processes techniques have been applied on ETM+ data for studying characteristics of porphyry type mineralization. This study showed that the fuzzy classification on the resulted principal component images maybe useful for the delineation of hydrothermal altered zones. The photo lineament factor value maps based on the filtered panchromatic band of ETM+ is also useful for exploration of both porphyry and vein type mineralization.
