CLASSIFICATION OF INTACT ROCKS AND ROCK MASSES FOR ENGINEERING PURPOSES

An engineering classification is suggested which is applicable to both intact as well as jointed rocks based on their compressive strength and modulus values in the uniaxial case, after mod$cations to Deere and Miller approach. The strength and modulus of jointed rocks are linked to the
corresponding values of intact rocks and assessed based on joint frequency, strength along the sliding joint andjoint inclination. Axial failure strain has also been considered in classzfiing the rocks instead of modulus value.
